Photography at Downside Abbey

Downside Abbey has always welcomed photographers, who come to admire the inspirational architectural splendour of the Basilica of St Gregory the Great.

Over the past few weeks we were happy to welcome a local photographer, who has created some stunning images of the basilica. John Law has kindly shared these images with us and we’re looking forward to welcoming him and members of the Mid Somerset Camera Club over the next few weeks. The basilica is well known for its architectural importance, being a Grade 1 listed building, and its stained glass, by artists such as Sir Ninian Comper and Hardman & Co. is very well known, and appreciated, by enthusiasts.

Our publication, Downside Abbey: an Architectural History  (Merrell: London and New York, 2011), edited by Abbot Aidan Bellenger, featured the acclaimed work of the late Paul Barker, who worked with the monks and staff, in capturing the majestic beauty of this sacred space.

We’ve shared some of these images below, and on our social media feeds. You can view a selection of John’s work on our Instagram.
