FROM THE ARCHIVES: AN ABBEY IN PICTURES

The photographic archives of Downside Abbey are a real treasure trove. Within this archive are thousands of images of the abbey church and its development since its construction was begun in 1878.

From photos of the tower with cows grazing outside to the finished nave, the building of the abbey has been carefully documented over the years. The fascinating image of the abbey tower under construction with wooden scaffolding around it show the days before health and safety! Also of interest is the installation of the ‘Great Bede’, the bell which hangs in the tower, being dragged into position with ropes and pulleys.
