THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE AT DOWNSIDE

Downside Abbey has a shared learning project with the University of the Third Age (U3A) as part of its Heritage Outreach Programme.

Thirteen volunteers from the U3A have been helping us digitise our photo archive over the past year. They have catalogued over 10,000 images dating back to 1854. The U3A is a ‘hard to reach’ audience of local people who dedicate a morning or an afternoon a week in helping institutions like Downside. It provides an opportunity for staff to train U3A volunteers in IT skills and to share our resources and knowledge with local stakeholders.

The photo archive will be available to search online once the programme has been completed in Easter 2019. You will be able to download images of the abbey in its various manifestations since 1854. Watch this space!
