School Pilgrimage

Downside was pleased to recently welcome children from St Francis Roman Catholic Primary School, Nailsea to the Abbey Church on a pilgrimage and activity day.

Almost 200 pupils visited us and were welcomed by Fr Michael Clothier before beginning a day of activities focused on aspects of the Abbey. Activities included drawing parts of stained glass windows, studying the shrine of St Oliver Plunkett, following a trail around the abbey looking for items on a list and making sandwiches which were donated to the community as part of the October month of service.

After their busy morning the pupils sat down to a small mass with Fr Michael before joining the monastic community for midday office. They then had lunch and a run around before heading back to the coaches for home. The day was a great success and we are happy to accommodate any other schools wishing to utilise Downside Abbey, or the archives and library for their curriculum or just for a visit.
