ABBEY VOLUNTEERS TOUR
15 Feb 2019
The abbey volunteers took part in their first event of the year this week when they were given a tour of the sacristy at Downside and had a chance for a private view of our Voices from the Cloister exhibition.
Every year we setup events for our hardworking volunteers as a way of thanking them for their help in the abbey archives and library and the abbey visitor centre. This year’s first gathering saw a large group of almost 30 take a guided tour of the sacristy, Britain’s largest, before seeing our new exhibition.
Dr Simon Johnson, Director of Heritage, gave a walking tour of the sacristy, showing the volunteers some of the relics and vestments in our heritage collections as well as discussing the history and architecture of the building. After this the group headed to the gallery chapels where the exhibition of some of our medieval collections was taking place.
And what better way to finish the afternoon than with some of the best cakes we have seen in the visitor centre! Our next volunteer event is currently being planned, so watch this space.
