WINTER IS COMING

Anyone who has been to Downside Abbey will know that the church is not exactly small and that it is very difficult to heat! This year the monks have decided to follow the example of many German and Austrian Benedictine communities and move to the “Winter church”, otherwise known as the crypt.

All the Divine Office and weekday Masses take place in the crypt, but the Sunday Mass (and other Masses at 10am) will continue to be in the main church. It is certainly warmer, and we are now getting used to a slightly different way of doing things as we get used to the smaller size.
