What are we reading?
06 Feb 2017
Most people probably know that at Downside, as in most Benedictine monasteries, we eat our meals in silence whilst someone reads a book. This has many reasons: we feed our minds as well as our bodies, and we get to hear many books that we otherwise would not read.
We are currently reading a new biography of Bishop Brownlow by Giles Mercer. Brownlow was Bishop of Clifton from 1894 – 1901, and with people such as Prior Edmund Ford, was instrumental in starting up the Catholic Glastonbury Pilgrimage, which continues to this day. After leaving Clifton he became Bishop of Plymouth. The book is called William Brownlow: Convert, Scholar, Bishop 1830 – 1901 and is available from Downside Abbey Publications.
