Walsingham Retreat

Dom Anselm once again spent the August bank holiday weekend assisting at the Youth 2000 retreat in Walsingham.

Before the Reformation Walsingham was the premier English place of pilgrimage, where people would visit the copy of the Holy House in Nazareth. The Catholic shrine, centred on the Slipper Chapel, where pilgrims would leave their shoes before walking the last mile barefoot, was bought by Charlotte Boyd in 1896, and on her death she left it to Downside. We then gave it to the Diocese, since we were unable to look after it from such a distance.

Dom Anselm spent the weekend hearing confessions and talking to people at the event, which saw 1,300 young Catholics gather for talks, Mass, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the rosary. If you’re interested in attending the event next year, or learning more about the organisation, click here.
