Volunteer Tour

The Monastery Archives and Library volunteers recently went on a tour of Benedictine Bath. 

As part of our ongoing project and work in the monastery archives and library, we are always keen to be able to share the importance of Benedictine history and heritage. Our volunteers, an integral part of our project, were keen to know more about the 1200 years of Benedictine history in Bath.

So, we took a large number of them into Bath and toured the sites of the city associated with the Benedictines. These included Bath Abbey, once one of the largest Cathedrals in Britain, St John’s Hospital, the Mission Theatre, the Old Theatre Royal and St John the Evangelist Church. 

All who attended had a great day (the rain held off!) and found out a lot about Bath’s history that they didn’t know. The public hanging of one of the perpetrators of the Bath Gordon Riots was a good example of this. We continue to develop our volunteering programme and our next visit is in the planning.
