THE LONG GRASS

The environment is a key issue for everyone these days, including the community at Downside. That is why, whilst not always looking the tidiest, we ensure to leave large areas of grass uncut so as to encourage wildflowers and insects.

This project enables bees, butterflies and large numbers of other bugs to flourish and also lets us grow wildflowers and other plants. The gardener here is very keen to protect the wildlife and spends much time each spring and summer cultivating our ‘wild areas’ so as to maximise the potential to help the environment.

We have plans in place to continue this work with the building of bug hotels, bird boxes and the development of more wildflower spaces for next year. Check back with us to see the progress we are making with our environmental projects!
