What is Downside Abbey?

Downside Abbey is a Roman Catholic monastery, home to our community of Benedictine monks. Downside Abbey Church is one of only four Minor Basilicas in England, marked as a Grade 1 listed building by English Heritage. We work with the local community along with Young Catholics and people around the world - offering Catholic retreats and guidance on Monastic Vocations.

We have a large Library and Archives with over 500,000 books in the Library alone. 10% of our collections are considered rare as they are dated pre-1801, including things like an 18th-century cookbook and a book of prophets. You can arrange to visit the Archives & Library along with visiting the Church & Monastery.
