Dante at Downside
Wednesday 18th March 2020
10.00am - 11.00am
Downside Abbey Visitor Centre
‘Dante and Shakespeare divide the modern world: there is no third.’ T.S. Eliot’s judgement is bold, and although all of us in this country have some familiarity with Shakespeare, few of us know Dante.
George Ferzoco from the University of Bristol’s Department of Religion and Theology, will talk about the man’s life, works, and reception by theologians and popes as well as in popular culture.
A splendid incunable of Dante’s Comedy, normally kept in the special collections of Downside’s wonderful library, will be on display.
Donations are welcome and refreshments will be available in the Abbey Visitor Centre before and after the lecture
Booking is essential by emailing Steven Parsons here or calling 01761 235323
