MANUSCRIPT LIBRARIAN VISIT

We were lucky enough to be visited by internationally renowned manuscript librarian Ilya Dines from the Library of Congress, Washington DC this week.

Ilya spent some time looking through our medieval manuscript collections in the monastery library and even managed to discover some fragments of manuscripts in some of our 17th and 18th century books! Ilya’s visit was part of our ongoing partnership with Bristol University and its Department of Theology and Religion.

Downside’s collections of medieval manuscripts are a source of pride for the community, as it is becoming increasingly clear that we have a nationally important assemblage of books and documents. This has been emphasised by Ilya’s work in our library and his comments, ‘can I stay here for a week?!’ We look forward to welcoming Ilya back again soon.
