Downside Monastery Library is delighted to announce that our collection of John Speed maps is now available to purchase as high resolution digital images.
John Speed is arguably one of the most famous cartographers in history, and we are lucky enough to hold a number of original maps from his Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain 1676. This volume was first printed in 1611 and 1612, and was seen as the most comprehensive atlas of Great Britain at the time. It features the first set of individual county maps of England, Wales and Ireland with some detailed town plans.
Downside Library is now offering the chance to purchase high resolution images of these maps for £15 each as part of our reprographic services. A full list of available maps is listed below:
