HISTORIC CHURCHES COMMITTEE CONFERENCE

Dr Simon Johnson, Director of Heritage, represented Downside Abbey at the annual Historic Churches Committee Conference held at Cornerstones in Cardiff recently. The event, chaired by the Archbishop of Cardiff, George Stack, brought together heritage managers from the UK with a particular focus on the Patrimony of the Roman Catholic church in England and Wales.

Papers were given on Church Patrimony, Inventories, and John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute. Delegates were later given a private tour of Cardiff Castle where the Marquess had a summer residence and the work of William Burges is revealed in all its neo-Gothic finery.

The work of the Historic Churches Committee helps Catholic churches in protecting their heritage in collaboration with statutory authorities such as the Ancient Monuments Society and Historic England.
