Heritage Open Day at Downside Abbey

Earlier in the month Downside Abbey took part in the national Heritage Open Day scheme. We welcomed over 100 people to our Grade 1 listed Abbey Church and minor-basilica. As part of the Open Day programme, sponsored by the National Trust, we opened up our monastic gardens and cemetery for the public. These areas are strictly private and open for one day a year.

Russell, our Head Groundsman, and Diane, our Archives and Library Volunteer Manager, led our team of volunteer guides who gave tours of the church, served tea and cake in the Visitor Centre, and welcomed visitors from far and wide (one came all the way from Brussels!)

The Abbey Church is open Monday to Friday 1000 – 1600 every week – you are very welcome to come and enjoy this architectural masterpiece and place of prayer.
