DOWNSIDE AND GLASTONBURY EXHIBITIONS 2019

We welcomed Glastonbury Abbey to Downside this week as part of our South West heritage exchange between these two Benedictine foundations. Downside has had a fruitful collaboration with Glastonbury for many years. Downside and Glastonbury are planning a series of exhibitions in the Spring and Summer of 2019 focusing on Downside’s medieval patrimony including its rich Opus Anglicanum collections.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Downside monks sought and purchased a large collection of medieval vestments highlighting the Benedictines medieval inheritance in the newly restored abbey church. The coat of arms of Glastonbury Abbey, with the Virgin and Child enthroned, can be seen throughout Downside’s abbey-church.
