DOM JOHN IS AN ACOLYTE

There are a number of stages to becoming a priest, some of which are better known than others. A man has to be accepted by a Bishop or religious order, and study the required philosophy and theology, but he also has to be instituted first as a lector and then as an acolyte.

Last Friday Dom John was instituted as an acolyte by Abbot Primate Gregory Polan, at the request of Abbot Nicholas, at a Mass at Sant’Anselmo in Rome, the international Benedictine college, where he is currently studying.

As an instituted acolyte he is a minister of holy communion (for the whole Church rather than a particular parish) and to put out the Blessed Sacrament for prayer. This is the final step before being ordained a deacon in due course.
