DOM ANSELM AND ECCLESIASTES AT BRISTOL

Dom Anselm was invited to give a seminar on a subject of his choice at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Bristol this week.

His choice was the topic of “Life and Death According to Ecclesiastes”, picking up and widening the subject of his dissertation for his Licence degree in Rome. The seminar was attended by a number of students and members of the Department, and led to a good discussion of the importance of the text for modern readers of the Old Testament, and the author’s potentially nihilistic view of life.

For Dom Anselm this had been a good opportunity to revisit earlier areas of research and to engage with theologians on his area of special interest. Dr George Ferzoco, from the Department, and a friend of Downside, thanked Dom Anselm for going to Bristol and for the insights he had given into this fascinating text, which many of those present were sure to read or re-read.
