Archive Collections – South African Maps

Within the extensive archives at Downside are many maps.

Recently we have also come across these wonderful maps of the Transvaal in South Africa from 1892. They are printed onto glazed linen and hand coloured by Schlumpf of Switzerland and compiled by Troyes of South Africa.

It is possible that the map was brought back to Downside by one of the three monks who served as Military Chaplains during the Boer War. Several places mentioned in letters home from the monks are shown in the maps. Wherever the maps originated, they most definitely add to our already substantial collections here at Downside.
