ARCHAEOLOGY TALK
03 Mar 2020
What a fascinating start to our 2020 Lecture Series!!
An informative and enlightening talk by Cai Mason of Wessex Archaeology West about their work on the Bath Abbey Footprint Project took place here at Downside this week. The large number of attendees were treated to a brief but interesting description of the works and what has been found. As one person said, you just don’t know what is underneath the streets!
The lecture discussed some of the finds during the excavations, including burial grounds, walls, tiled floors and even what may be a previously unknown 9th century chapel. The archaeological works are answering and asking many questions about the old layouts of Bath and locations of buildings. It even seems the Normal Cathedral may have been in a slightly different position than was thought.
Thanks to Cai and Wessex Archaeology for their time and a truly fascinating lecture.
